On Saturday, January 19 2002, it finally snowed in Northern Virginia! Even though there was just two inches of the white stuff by the early afternoon, kids and parents, anxious for some winter fun, came out in droves to slide down the mud and grass-covered slopes of the drainage area known as the "gorge" (or was it called the "gulch?"). The snow changed to sleet during the late afternoon when Alex decided to go for a slippery ride on his Kawasaki motorcycle over to a friends house. He made it safe and sound, but said the sleet stung his face during the icy ride. At about 9:00 p.m., a second storm came through and dumped a couple more inches of the white stuff.
My new Nikon Coolpix 5000 digital camera came in handy for recording the following images of our first snow of 2002:

Our community winter playground called the "Gorge"

Snowy woods behind our house. We could see rabbit and squirrel tracks along
the path.

After changing to sleet during the afternoon, a cold front blew in and second snowstorm around 9:00 p.m. Saturday night.

After starting the coffee machine, I captured a snowy sunrise just outside
the sliding glass door leading to our backyard deck.

Looks like about 3 inches of snow fell during our first winter storm.

Too bad Diane's day care kiddos are missing this!

A early morning view out our front door. Can you see who's hiding under the
Spruce tree?

It's our snow bunny! He (or she) came back!
